Rivers State Government to promote commercial agriculture--Governor Wike



Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the State Government is committed to promoting commercial agriculture as a means of creating employment opportunities for the people.
Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Tuesday when he received Mr. Kazeem Adekunle Alaka, the Port Harcourt Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor Wike said that the administration will focus on oil palm produce and cassava allocated to the state by the CBN.
The governor noted that investments in agriculture already being consolidated by his administration will further develop the state's economy and enhance food security.
He commended the CBN governor for being firm and consistent in the application of monetary policies. He stated that policy somersaults in the past negatively affected the economy.
He said: "I commend the CBN governor and the management for being firm on the application of economic policies. That is good for the country".
The governor said the Bank Verification Number introduction by the CBN has assisted the state government in reducing her wage bill as only verified staff are paid salaries.
He assured that the State Government will always collaborate with the CBN for relevant economic programmes to take effect.
In his remarks, the Port Harcourt Branch Controller of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Kazeem Adekunle Alaka announced that the CBN will assist farmers in the state to improve on the cultivation of oil palm produce and cassava allocated to the state.
He appealed to the state government to launch sensitization programmes to ensure that more farmers key into the programme.
