These cities will be very rich in 10 years

Doha, Qatar
Forget New York, London or Hong Kong. Here are seven cities that are racing up the rankings of the world's richest, and will be among the top 10 by 2025, according to researchers from McKinsey
Qatar's Doha is predicted to be one of the rising stars in terms of per capita GDP. The country is already among the richest in the world, and huge investments ahead of the 2022 Soccer World Cup are set to give it extra boost.
                          Bergen, Norway
Bergen is the second most populous city in Norway.
It is already at the forefront of the country's economy, but McKinsey's researchers predict it will rise to become one of the richest cities globally. It serves as the hub for Norway's energy industry, shipping, and marine research.

                                Trondheim, Norway
Another Norwegian city on the list, Trondheim is the birthplace of mobile tech. It is where the GSM standard was invented in the 1980s.
Since then, the local tech scene has been booming, and now boasts over 550 startups with more than 10,000 employees, according to officials.
                         Hwaseong, South Korea
Hwaseong, although not widely known outside South Korea, is a booming city south of Seoul. It's home to the global research facilities of Hyundai (HYMTF) and Samsung (SSNLF), as well as flagship plants for Kia and LG Electronics.
The city is investing heavily in new residential real estate in the super modern Dongtan district.
                          Asan, South Korea
Like its neighbor Hwaseong, Asan is home to several large industrial complexes.
It also benefits from being near the port of Pyeongtaek, which is the closest port to east China, and a global shipping hub.
                                    Rhine Ruhr, Germany
Rhine-Ruhr is already one of the most successful urban areas in Germany. It's the third largest in Europe, trailing only Paris and London.
Many powerhouses of German industry and finance are based in the region, including 12 Fortune 500 companies.
                              Macau, China
Macau is an example of how quickly things can change. Tipped to become one of the 10 richest cities in the world by 2025, Macau suffered a huge recession at the end of last year.
Its economy slumped 17% after an anti-corruption drive hurt Macau's casinos, the main driver of the territory's economy. Growth is expected to return next year, but experts say Macau must find other sources of income to recover its momentum.

Marriage could be a distraction for me at this point in my career' - Flavour

In an interview with Hip TV, singer Flavour who has two babymamas, Sandra Okagbue and Anna Banner, says marriage could be a distraction for any successful artiste, especially him and that most successful artiste who are at the peak of their craft, crash once they get married
"Marriage is not a thing that you just go into. This music business is a serious business. My own opinion, I think if you are in the peak of your career, you don't need any distraction. So for now I think marriage could be a distraction for me because it is a whole big institution that when you go in, you have to be fully prepared to know what you are getting into.
And right now looking at everything, its not so easy for me now....and most of my colleagues, whenever they get married, everything starts crashing down. I keep asking people, have you ever seen a successful musician having a good home and a good career? Its not going to be easy. If you know one, just tell me"he said

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane's trousers tear again (Photos)

Who makes his clothes? It's either his thigh muscles fatten up whenever he is coaching or his tailor or he needs to change his tailor as Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane suffered a wardrobe malfunction last night against Man City in the champions league, just like he did in the last champions league match against Wolfsburg. His trousers tore at the back while he was ranting and raving on the touchline for Real Madrid last night.

IGP Solomon Arase visits the area disrupted by Fulani Herdsmen (Photos)

The Inspector-General of Police IGP Solomon E. Arase today visited the scene where pastoral farmers attacked innocent people at Nimbo Uzowani LGA of Enugu State, to commiserate with families of the victims. He also visited some victims recovering at Bishop Shanaham Hospital, Nzuka and National orthopedic Hospital, Enugu. See more photos after the cut...

Eyewitness Account Of Fulani Attack In Enugu State

It is with profound pain that I type this information, I am previously aware of the Biblical sayings that the HEART of man is desperately evil but I think the heart of the fulanis is that of the devil himself......

Over the years, we have lived harmoniously in "partial" peace with the Fulanis in the South-East until things started falling apart since early 2011 when they started being torn in our flesh......their wicked act predates Buhari's regime but the only major difference between then and now is publicity, believe me the media is not helping matters at all.

How on earth will the national dailies reel out conflicting numbers of victims in the same incidence? Are they that lazy to stay in their AC office and grant fictitious interviews to anonymous persons even when in this case every body is authorized to speak? Punch wrote 20 dead, sun-15 dead, Nairaland written by deluded FKK and his cohorts, 40 ,100 and even quoting 200 dead.......hmmm, to put the record straight so far about 6 dead bodies have been discovered and deposited at the Bishop Shanahan mortuary.

I must and also encourage you to commend the resilience and courage of the youth of that NIMBO community in Uzor-Uwani Local Govt. Of Enugu state.......they showed they were not cowards by doing everything within their powers to resist their attackers............the crux of the matter is that the Fulani herdsmen numbering around 50 took them unawares at around 3am in the morning, on sensing the impending danger, they rang the town bell when unknown to them the Fulanis had laid ambush, the men on hearing the bell started coming out to the village square to know what was going on.

On sighting people coming out for the meeting, the herdsmen started shooting sporadically and the people initially scampered for safety.....in the dark early hours of the day, they scared away many of them and set 2houses, car and some motorcycles ablaze, they continued till around 6.30am when the men came out from their hiding places and assembled to arm themselves and pursue the Fulanis who hard ran away through a neighboring Kogi village.

Shortly, the police and Army arrived the scene and foiled the attempted revenge mission, they surrounded the village and shoot sporadically into the air to calm down the saturated atmosphere...the people relaxed, corporated with them and started looking 4 the dead and injured victims to rescue. As at monday morning, 5 dead bodies with many injured ones were taken to Nsukka, the sixth corpse was discovered in the bush yesterday when the Governor visited.

As usual, many Nairalanders propounded many theories about the incidence to cajole the public into what they believe in.................one wrote that the Governor called Buhari but He refused to answer, does it mean if the Governors immediate family was involved that he will wait for Buhari to order police for rescue?........why don't they wait for Buhari's order before going for mass arrest of unsuspecting members of the public whose only offense is that the Police needed bail out money for their selfish greed?

Again, that some of the displace villagers are taking refuge in some primary schools in Nsukka, which is a blatant lie,no body was displaced that much, the people of the community went about their normal Business yesterday, and that was why the Governor was able to address them in the market area where normal trade was going on or were they transported from the IDP camp to meet the Governor? As a result the whole community of Fulani ran away from the Local Government and the neighboring towns, and the villagers had a crucial meeting meeting where they agreed on the way 4wrd before seeing the Governor. However, after crying yesterday, the Governor promised #100k to each family of the victim and #5mill to the traditional ruler to cater for the injured.....

For sending the commissioner of Police, GOC 82Div, the state Governor and the IG of police to the scene within 48hrs, I think the federal Government has shown concern which will remain cosmetic concern till the perpetrators of the pogrom are brought to book

Buhari is my president

My Fetish Husband Deceived Me, Married Me With Charm – Wife - Family

Musili came back the following day and touched me, I don't know how I got to his village, and I started having babies.

One Omotosho Adejoke has dragged her husband, Omotosho Musili before an Igando Customary court sitting Lagos state, alleging that he confused and lured her with charms before they got married.

The complainant, a 39-year-old food vendor told the court on Wednesday that her husband was adulterous.

She claimed her husband was in the habit of bringing his lovers to their one-room apartment to spend days or months before leaving.

She, however, prayed the curt to dissolve her 16-year-old marriage, stating that, “When I was single, my husband approached me that he wanted to marry me, I told him that I had a fiancé and that our marriage was near.

“Musili a bricklayer came back the following day and touched me, I don’t know how I got to his village, and I started having babies.

“As an orphan, nobody looked for me but now I am back to my senses,” she lamented.

On accusation of infidelity, Adejoke said “I always leave the bed for them and sleep on the floor, on four occasions I had reported him to our families.

“Recently, he came home with a lady who stole my pants and brassier, I discovered that after she had left.

“I told my husband to retrieve my underwear from his lover, he later came home with a bra and pant but those were not the underwear that were missing,” she added, noting that her husband was always threatening her life.

“My husband is threatening to kill me, my hair dresser informed me that anytime I finished making my hair that my husband always come begging her to give him my hair.

“And he always tell me that if I leave him that he will kill me and run away.

“I am the one responsible for feeding the family, paying the house rent and the children’s school fees,” the mother of four boys noted, adding that she was scared of contracting sexually transmitted diseases from her husband due to his unfaithfulness.

Meanwhile, on his part, her 47-year-old husband denied all the allegations.

He said, “I pay my bills, I usually give her N500 per day, but she also assists me as any good wife will do.

“I returned the underwear my lover took away from our house and I never approached my wife’s hairdresser requesting for her hair.

The respondent begged the court to help him appeal to his wife that he still loves her.

The Court President, Adegboyega Omilola, advised the couple to go back home, talk over the issue in peace and adjourned the matter till May 20.

How Buhari Ignored Ugwuanyi Calls To Allow Fulani Herdsmen Massacre Enugu Indige

IN a new twist that could lead to reprisal attacks by Enugu State indigenes, over the murder of their people, there are confirmed reports that the tragedy which took place in Enugu, would have been averted, had the President had put National Interest above self.

Mezie Times have been reliably informed that, the Governor of Enugu State, had before the ugly incident, placed a call to the president, which was put on hold for over an hour 15 minutes.

Sources say, this call was made in the presence of 13 men and 4 women, where the president’s aide told the Governor that the president will get back to him.

Buhari through his aide, after 4hours of waiting, told Enugu State Governor that the president will do something about it.
Eye witnesses when this calls were placed to the President said, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on hearing that the police have not arrived at Uzouwani called GOC 82 division for help.

He was referred to the presidency again, where his call was again, put on hold, for nearly 2 hours.
Desperate to speak with the President, which ended in futility, news filtered in that the attack he was planning to prevent has actually taken place.

We gathered that, within an hour, the commissioner of police and GOC who referred the Governor to the President, mobilized their men to stop retaliation.

Residents of Enugu have queried why the police commissioner and GOC need presidency order before they can protect the innocent citizens and also why police and military sent their men to Uzouwani after the attack to prevent retaliation.

A resident who confided in us, also demanded to know why a sitting Governor cannot use the support of police and military to protect his people.

Since the Enugu massacre, Nigerians have expressed their anger, and has charged the Governor, to make use of the media, which was used by Orji Uzor Kalu, in his time as Governor of Abia State, to avert this type of unnecessary deaths in Okigwe during his tenure.
President Buhari has been accused by some section of Nigerians, to be a jihadist who has a hidden agenda.

Speaking, a source said, “Don't wait for police and military, use the media which is free. Put the call before public media, have it taped and watched and monitored all over the world and Uzouwani citizens would have rushed back home in their millions to protect their relatives. The world will see how a tyrant value lives of his people.”

There are calls, demanding probe/investigation on this massacre and also for the GOC and commissioner to be queried on their negligence in protecting the lives of the citizenry.

Fighting corruption, ignoring economy justifiable- lie mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has once again claimed that 55 persons stole an amount that was equivalent to a quarter of the 2015 budget under the reign of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Recall that this is not the first time that the former spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will be making this claim.
When he made the claim earlier this year, the Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, told him to list the names of the culprits or “shut up.”
Mohammed had exclusively told THE BRIEF back then that Fayose deserves no reply but the culprits know themselves.
Mohammed made this recent statement on Monday, April 25, while speaking in Lagos at a town hall meeting organised by the Federal Government.
He argued that nothing else would work in the country unless corruption is fought to a standstill.
This he said in response to widespread criticism that the government has been concentrating on its war against corruption at the expense of other crucial sectors of the economy.
“On the issue of corruption, I’ve heard many commentators say that this administration is fighting corruption without paying attention to the economy. Of course, this is not true,” Mohammed said.
“But even if it was, it is patently justified. Why? Unless we fight corruption to a standstill, nothing else we do will yield positive results.
“It was corruption that prolonged the war against Boko Haram and sent many soldiers and civilians to their early graves. It was corruption that ensured that while oil was selling for over $100 per barrel, we had nothing to show for the windfall.
“It was corruption that gave us darkness instead of light when we supposedly pumped millions of dollars into the power sector. I can tell you today that we are squarely fighting corruption and we are winning. The situation is serious and no government can fight the battle alone. That explains why we have launched a nationwide sensitization campaign to make Nigerians to join the anti-graft war.
“We launched the campaign in January and we released what some people call a bombshell, that between 2006 and 2013, just 55 people allegedly stole a total of N1.34trn, an amount that is more than one quarter of the 2015 national budget.
“Even if just one-third of the stolen fund is recovered, it will provide us with 6 Lagos Ibadan express ways and in addition, it will build 183 schools to educate 3,974 children from primary to tertiary education, also 36 modern hospitals. The money that was originally stolen represents the total earning s of four African nations.
“The funds meant to buy arms and ammunition for our soldiers to fight Boko Haram was shared out by few people for political purposes. What is remarkable in all of this is that no one who has been named to have shared in the money has denied it. All they have done is give very ridiculous excuses for what they did. All of must be part of the war; its not Buhari’s war, its not APC’s war, its Nigeria’s survival war.”
Mohammed also spoke about the government’s spirited efforts to rescue the economy, expressing confidence that better days are ahead.
“Our nation’s economy or whatever is left of it poses a great challenge to all of us for one. We have lost a sizable chunk in the price of oil,” he said.
“Think about it, if you lose about 70% of your salary, your life can never be the same again. Oil crashed from about $100 to $30. For an economy like ours, this is nothing short of a disaster but this government has decided to turn this disaster into a blessing by working assiduously to diversify our economy from oil. Agriculture, solid minerals, culture and tourism are some of the sectors that we are working to rejuvenate.
“By these efforts and all, the administration has decided to block all financial loopholes with the treasury single account (TSA), into which a lot of money has accrued so far. Funds, which would have ordinarily found their way into private pockets, are now piling their way into the public treasury account to be used for the benefit of all of us. Over 30,000 ghost workers have been discovered and weeded out, saving the government of billions of naira.
“This budget has recorded a first, with the capital expenditure increased to 30%. Beyond that is the social intervention areas that will reach millions of citizens and leave them out of poverty.
“The first is the employment of 500,000 unemployed graduates who will be trained and employed as teachers and deployed to our primary schools, employment of 370,000 graduates and artisans, cash transfer to the most vulnerable Nigerians – not to the unemployed youth – school feeding programme targeting 4.5 million children in the 2016 budget, and lastly bursary for those studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

4,800-Year-Old Fossil of Mother Embracing Baby Found in Taiwan

The fossils are believed to be the earliest evidence of human activity on the island

Archaeologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a mother cradling a baby in Taiwan, museum officials said Tuesday. The pair have held each other for 4,800 years.
“When it was unearthed, all of the archaeologists and staff members were shocked,” said Chu Whei-lee, a curator at Taiwan’s National Museum of Natural Science, according to Reuters. “Why? Because the mother was looking down at the baby in her hands.”
The mother and child were found during the excavation of 48 sets of remains from graves near the central city of Taichung. The fossils are believed to be the earliest evidence of human activity in central Taiwan.

Occupy NASS : Hypocrisy Or Genuine National Assignment? (photo)

When the occupy Nigeria protest took place it was a movement against a Government that decided to remove subsidy and liberalize a sector that was perceived as inefficiently corrupt and the then opposition party now the government in power

 insisted that subsidy must remain.

Despite all entreaties and explanations that subsidy on petroleum products were not sustainable in the long run ,Tinubu, Fashola and others financed street parties and insisted that subsidy must stay, now the same people want to scrap subsidy and nobody is occupying anywhere!

The last time I slept in a fuel Station was over 20 years ago when we took turns to sleep in my Fathers Peugeot 504 waiting to buy fuel. I remember vividly well how the then military task force usually led by young officers used horse whips on the young and old as they tried to assert authority at fuel stations.

Unfortunately that sad part of history is suddenly becoming a way of life as citizens who hitherto drive in and out of fuel stations now keep vigil at fuel stations under very dehumanising conditions waiting for drops of fuel.

My question is simple where were the promoters of occupy NASS when Nigerians languished on queues? Till date premium motor spirit(Fuel) has remained above 140 in 34 of the 36 states of the federation the only exception being Abuja and parts of Lagos and those occupying NASS wants us to believe they are protecting our interest! How ?

Herdsmen have been on rampage maiming and destroying at will, from Ondo to Delta, from Agatu in Benue state to Enugu in the South East these herdsmen have left a trail of destruction, sorrow ,and pain yet the powers that be see nothing wrong in the actions these renegades.

Where were the promoters of Occupy NASS when the government decided to import grass from Brazil for the comfort of herdsmen and their cattle while simultaneously banning the import of rice for humans?

In the eyes of the promoters of the occupy NASS the lives of thousands of unarmed of Shia men, women and children massacred by overzealous security forces and those consistently been snuffed out by herdsmen is of no value, if it has the protest should have being in opposition to the creation of Sambisa forest in the six geo-political zones of the country in the name of grazing reserves.

For the first time in the history of our great nation the country produced zero megawatts. Despite paying three times the normal bills, long periods of blackouts is fast becoming a permanent way of life yet we have a siting power minister who famously thundered that “a serious government will fix the power problem in six months ” yet because of biscuits the promoters of occupy NASS will rather go for Saraki’s jugular.

This is the kind of hypocrisy, insincerity, double standard and self centeredness that has prevented us from making good progress as a nation, lacing pseudo- activism with the venom of revenge and distraction is a prescription that never works.

The complete lack of commonsense on the part of the promoters of the occupy NASS agenda and their blind followers shows that much still needs to be done in promoting civic literacy as it appears to be only weapon capable of extricating citizens especially young Nigerians from the fangs of of those have consistently used them to mask the real pains, needs and desire of the nations citizens.

World Bank Raises 2016 Oil Price Forecast To $41 Per Barrel

Fresh hope of a quicker recovery is on the horizon for cash-strapped Nigeria as the World Bank has raised its 2016 oil price forecast up from the previous level of $37 per barrel to a new height of $41.

The crude oil price at the international market according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data yesterday was between $43 and $44 per barrel.

Despite the country’s diversification efforts, crude oil remains the major income earner for the country with the sub-nationals heavily depending on revenue from oil sales at the monthly Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund their activities now reeling in pains since last year when oil prices took a downward plunge as low as $25 per barrel. This followed global slow growth when Nigeria’s 2016 budget benchmark price estimate was fixed at $38 per barrel.

However, the World Bank yesterday said crude oil market rebounded to $40 per barrel in April following production disruptions in Iraq and Nigeria and a decline in non-Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production, mainly U.S. shale.

A proposed production freeze by major producers failed to materialise at a meeting in mid-April.

The World Bank explained that the review of the forecast followed improving market sentiment and a weakening dollar, declaring that its new 2016 forecast for crude oil prices is now $41 per barrel from $37 per barrel, pointing out that Commodity Markets Outlook, as an oversupply in markets, is expected to recede.

“We expect slightly higher prices for energy commodities over the course of the year as markets rebalance after a period of oversupply,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the Commodities Markets Outlook.

“Still, energy prices could fall further if OPEC increases production significantly and non-OPEC production does not fall as fast as expected.”

All main commodity indexes tracked by the World Bank are expected to decline in 2016 from the year before due to persistently elevated supplies, and in the case of industrial commodities – which include energy, metals, and agricultural raw materials – weak growth prospects in emerging market and developing economies.

Energy prices, including oil, natural gas and coal, are due to fall 19.3 per cent in 2016 from the previous year, a more gradual drop than the 24.7 per cent slide forecast in January.

Non-energy commodities, such as metals and minerals, agriculture, and fertilizers, are due to decline 5.1 per cent this year, a downward revision from the 3.7 per cent drop forecast in January.

Ajimobi: No Free Land For Grazing

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi yesterday criticised the proposed creation of grazing zones across the country as ill-advised.

He warned that the proposal is against the spirit of the land use act and the overriding public interest.

The governor spoke on the raging controversy trailing the alleged sponsorship of a bill at the National Assembly for the creation of grazing zones for cattle across the country as a panacea to the perennial clash between trespassing herdsmen and farm owners.

It was at the launch of the ‘Agric Oyo,’ the Oyo State agriculture initiative, at Paago, via Iseyin, in Oke Ogun zone.

At the event were investors, outgrowers, beneficiaries, institutional partners, outtakers, traditional rulers and top officials of the state.

The governor said: “This is the time to call a spade a spade. Those clamouring for creation of grazing zones across the country should have a rethink. It is against the Land Use Act; it is against the law of natural justice to seize people’s land to cater for someone’s cattles.

“ Grazing zones could be created for those who are traditional cattle rearers in their areas. I’m not against that. But, you cannot come here and tell me you want to occupy our land for grazing zones. The land exists in our respective states and as such the right owners should decide what to do with them.

“Anybody outside this zone willing to rear cattle here will need to approach the state to buy the land and we offer what is available with rules. There is no free land for grazing zones. We need to take this firm position. It won’t happen .”

On the new agriculture initiative, the governor was upbeat that it would create one million direct jobs across the agric value chain thereby taking many unemployed youths off the streets.

Ajimobi was confident that the state would become the food basket of the South in the short run when the programme began in full swing, with the ultimate ambition of feeding the country.

The governor, who said that the initiative was aimed at diversifying the state’s economy, assured the people that the programme would add value to the lives of citizens across different sectors.

He said: “I am elated that the agricultural initiative has attracted these important dignitaries in the Agric business world and as well as a vast majority of our youths as beneficiaries of the scheme.

“This project will reduce over-dependence on oil, create wealth, alleviate poverty, encourage productivity, create jobs and bring about the overall socio-economic uplift of Oyo State.”

“Farming is very profitable and we will do everything possible to make it attractive in Oyo State to diversify our economy.”

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi and the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Abdul-Ganiyu Adekunle Salawudeen, in their separate remarks, praisded Ajimobi for the initiative, which they said was unprecedented since the days of the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Zulu And Swazi Prettiest Virgin Girls Dance Naked For Their King (Read The Eye-Opening Insider Account)

The Reed Dance ceremony, is an annual Swazi and Zulu tradition held in August or September.

In Swaziland, tens of thousands of unmarried and childless Swazi girls and women travel from the various chiefdoms to Ludzidzini to participate in the eight-day event.

In South Africa, the ceremony Umkhosi woMhlanga takes place every year in September, at the Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal.

The girls come from all parts of Zululand, and in recent years there are also smaller groups from Swaziland, as well as more distant places such as Botswana and Pondoland. All girls are required to undergo a virginity test before they are allowed to participate in a royal dance, though in recent years the testing practice has been met with some opposition.

As part of the ceremony, the young women dance bare-breasted for their king, and each carries a long reed, which is then deposited as they approach the king.

The girls take care to choose only the longest and strongest reeds, and then carry them towering above their heads in a slow procession, up the hill to the palace. The procession is led by the chief Zulu princess, who takes a prominent role throughout the festival. If the reed should break before the girl reaches that point, it is considered to signal that the girl has already been sexually active.

The ceremony was reintroduced by King Goodwill Zwelethini in 1991, as a means to encourage young Zulu girls to delay sexual activity until marriage, and thus limiting the possibility of HIV transmission.

In 2007, about 30,000 girls took part to the event. The organisers of the ceremony have occasionally enforced strict rules on photographers, as some of them have been accused of publishing the pictures on pornographic websites. In past years, the event was attended by the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, and then Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Zweli Mkhize.

In Swaziland the girls gather at the Queen Mother’s royal village, which currently is Ludzidzini Royal Village. After arriving at the Queen Mother’s royal residence, the women disperse the following night to surrounding areas and cut tall reeds. The following night they bundle them together and bring them back to the Queen Mother to be used in repairing holes in the reed windscreen surrounding the royal village.

After a day of rest and washing the women prepare their traditional costumes consisting of a bead necklace, rattling anklets made from cocoons, a sash, and skirt. Many of them carry the bush knife they used to cut the reeds as a symbol of their virginity.

Today’s Reed Dance Ceremony developed in the 1940s from the Umcwasho custom where young girls were placed in age regiments to ensure their virginity. Once they reached the age of marriage they would perform labor for the Queen Mother followed by dancing and a feast. The official purpose of the annual ceremony is to preserve the women’s chastity, provide tribute labour for the Queen Mother, and produce solidarity among the women through working together.

The women sing and dance as they parade in front of the royal family as well as a crowd of spectators, tourists and foreign dignitaries. After the parade, groups from select villages take to the centre of the field and put on a special performance for the crowd. The King’s many daughters and royal princesses also participate in the reed dance ceremony and are distinguished by the crown of red feathers in their hair.

In 2013, a young woman was seeking asylum in Britain after she spurned the advances of the polyamorous King Mswati III of Swaziland and refused to join his harem of 13 wives.

Tintswalo Ngobeni, 22, fled to England from the southern African nation as a teenager after she caught the attention of the millionaire monarch, a notoriously oppressive ruler known for his lavish lifestyle.

As part of Swazi custom, King Mswati III, 45, is permitted to choose a new bride every year, especially during the annual Reed Dance ceremony.

Miss Ngobeni, who now lives in Birmingham, was just 15 when the King made his advances after seeing her at the palace of his fourth wife, LaNgangaza. She said she was ‘terrified’ when she learned of his marriage intentions.

she said, “He started calling me at boarding school. He would ask me if I wanted to be a part of the royal family.
I had to keep quiet about my fears but I knew I didn’t want to get married to him and have a life devoted to the king”,

“His wives are kept in their palace, surrounded by bodyguards, and they can’t really go anywhere unless the king says so. The only thing they do is go to America once a year, as the king gives them a shopping allowance’.

Miss Ngobeni was forced to abandon a comfortable lifestyle in a private boarding school, as her aunt who was her chief guardian arranged the escape to England to join her mother, who moved to Birmingham five years earlier, fleeing an abusive husband.

“I didn’t have a choice,’ she said. ‘Nobody has ever turned down the king or dares to disobey him, so I just disappeared.”

Since her arrival in England, Miss Ngobeni has become a vocal opponent of the oppressive Swazi regime, where political opposition parties are banned and activists routinely arrested or assaulted.

However, Miss Ngobeni’s high-profile activities, including weekly protests outside the Swazi embassy in London with activist group Swazi Vigil, have caught the attention of the authorities in her home country and she now believes she is in more danger than ever.

“Recently I had news that people had been sent from Swaziland to come and get me, which really scares me. If I went back, I would be arrested or much worse as there are people there who are tortured, beaten up or killed for being politically active”, she said.

Miss Ngobeni now lives in fear of having to return to Swaziland, after her first plea for political asylum in England in 2007 was denied in 2011. She was arrested and taken to an immigration detention centre after 18 months of reporting weekly to the authorities.

However, after pressure from the TUC and the office of Roger Godsiff, Labour MP for Birmingham, Miss Ngobeni was released and has now been granted an appeal by the Home Office.

“We were very pleased solicitors were successful in achieving a judicial review into Miss Ngobeni’s case.” Mr. Godsiff said.

The Swaziland’s King Mswati III, who is following in his father’s footsteps, King Sobhuza, who had 70 wives and 400 children later choosed an 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant as his 15th. wife in 2014.

According to his palace spokesman, the king has introduced to the nation his new liphovela (royal fiancee), 18 years old Sindiswa Dlamini.

The young woman graduated from Mbabane’s St. Francis High School last year and is a finalist in the Miss Cultural Heritage beauty pageant.

As part of Swazi custom, King Mswati III, 45, is permitted to choose a new bride every year.

Hence, thousands of young girls gather annually and dance for the king at a reed dance in order to give King Mswati III the opportunity to choose another wife.

The wedding only takes place once the chosen virgin bride falls pregnant.

His wives are kept in their palace, surrounded by bodyguards, and they can’t really go anywhere unless the king says so.

The only thing they do is go to America once a year, as the king gives them a shopping allowance.

The father of 27 children, 45-year-old King Mswati III was a guest at the William and Kate wedding as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations last summer.

Three wives left his household in recent years. The latest, Queen LaGija, fled the palace in 2012 claiming years of physical and emotional abuse.

Another Queen LaDube, was reportedly abused after she was caught in bed with the justice minister, a close friend of the king.

Mswati had kidnapped and married the queen when she was 16 in 2005.

The king has also come under fire for his household’s lavish lifestyle.

Mswati reportedly has a personal fortune of around $200 million and the UN estimates that 70 percent of his 1.2 million subjects live below the poverty line.
