Nigeria's Economy Would Have Collapsed If Not For Buhari - LAI MUHAMMED
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Friday declared that the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the President of Nigeria in 2015 saved the country’s economy from imminent collapse due to the mismanagement of public funds and unbridled corruption.
According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Segun Adeyemi, the Minister stated this in Kano during a courtesy visit to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, shortly before the commencement of the Hausa language town hall meeting in the ancient city.
“For the fact that God loves this country, if any other political party had won the election, there would have been no economy to talk about. They wouldn’t have the courage or discipline to manage the economy,” he said.
Mohammed said through prudent management of resources and the introduction of creative ideas to block leakages, the President is gradually reviving the economy, and assured Nigerians that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel.
“This government, more than any government, has been working very hard because this is one government that genuinely believes in the people; it is one government that really cares for the poorest of the poor. For the first time we have a President whose integrity is actually driving the country,” he said.
He therefore appealed to Nigerians to be patient as the change they voted for will be gradual; noting that the past one year has been spent in laying a solid foundation for the country.
While describing the Kano town hall meeting as unique because the medium of communication is an indigenous language, the Minister said the idea of the town hall meetings is to communicate directly with the people and also feel their pulse on government policies and programmes.
In his remarks, the Kano Governor lauded the Minister for introducing the town hall meeting, particularly in indigenous languages, stressing that it is the surest way of bridging the gap between the government and the people.
“To decide to have the town hall meeting in a vernacular language, I think there is no better style and initiative than that single decision of the Honourable Minister,” he said.
Ganduje observed that following the analysis conducted after the election, it was discovered that not only APC members voted for the President, but that it was the consensus of opinions to pull Nigeria from the brink and return the country to the path of growth and sustainable development.
“In order to harmonise and also to satisfy the aspirations of those divergent opinions that came together and put us forward, there is no better way than this exercise that you have undertaken,” he said.
Buhari Didn’t Use Public Funds For Presidential Campaign, Stop Calling For Probe
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has condemned calls for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the funding of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2015 Presidential campaign.Oyegun, while speaking on WE FM’s “The Encounter with Constance Ikokwu,” said unlike the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which used public funds to finance its campaign, APC’s financing of the party’s Presidential campaign came from individual donations, thereby making it wrong to call for a probe.
He said, “You are comparing apples and grapes. It is the people’s money. You can’t use the money of the people to run parties and so the APC today is suffering from that basic correct policy decision.
“But campaign funds cannot come from the monies that belong to the generality of Nigerians.
“Individuals can donate, and companies can donate subject to limits that the law provides. We are not touching those. But where you take monies meant for positioning troops in the North East to fight against Boko Haram to fund parties (and) the most recent – when you take our crude, gave unregistered crude to exporters, repatriate the proceeds and use them to finance your political campaigns – that is wrong. That is impunity at its worst. So they are not comparable.”
He also stated that the current administration would not spare any of state governors found to have used public fund to finance their respective campaigns.
“As at today, of course there are APC governors and ex-governors that are under investigation, maybe not in respect or specifically campaign funds but there are.
“The basic principle is – impunity must be removed from the system and wherever the tree falls, so let it be!
“I am sure that if that happens, the kind of president that we have will look the other way. Normal process must take its course.”
Oyegun, while admitting that the ruling party is currently in a serious financial crises, stressed that the party won’t rely on the President for bail out.
He disclosed that a mechanism has been put in place that would make every member to pay at least N100 monthly due, adding that the party can realise between N10 million and N20 million monthly.
“We came into office as part of change and as far as our political situation is concerned it means that party should not be funded from public funds and that is the reality.
“And so we are making members to pay. We have over 12 million registered members of the party and we have all had a system where everyone will pay at least N100 per month to legitimize their membership.
“If in our calculation, five of N10 million of these we manage to collect them, at the end of the day we have very little,” Oyegun said.

Niger Delta Avengers Unveils Currency
Militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta has taken a new turn as militants have vowed to break away from the federation of Nigeria. The separatist feelings and aspirations which resulted in the ongoing bombing of oil and gas facilities in the region have eventually found expression in unveiling its 'national' currency.
Militants have been carry out attacks on oil and gas facilities of multinational oil corporations in the region the very latest being Chevron facility at its Escravos terminal on Thursday.
Niger Delta Avengers which have claimed responsibility for the attacks have vowed to stop at nothing until a sovereign state of the Niger Delta is actualized. A source who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity says much has been done to the region's ecosystem resulting from the operations of oil companies in the region and that every hue and cry raised so far to draw the government's attention to their predicament has fallen on deaf ears.
Hence the action to secede from Nigeria became absolutely necessary to save communities in the neglected region from gradual extinction.

Today , I can’t count N5,000 of my own-Former Super Eagles striker weeps
Former Super Eagles player, Femi Opabunmi, who has fallen from grace to grass. The Oyo state born player who was a member of the Super Eagles squad to the Japan 2002 World Cup under Coach Adegboye Onigbinde is now penniless and gradually going blind.
According to Saturday SUN,Opabunmi last played for Shooting Stars of Ibadan in the local scene. He played for a few clubs abroad, including Grasshoppers Zurich (Switzerland) and Chamois Niortais in France.
He was in fact the 3rd youngest player to ever play in the World Cup finals after Norman Whiteside and Samuel Eto’o. At the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship, Trindad and Tobago, Opabunmi scored a hat-trick against Australia and won himself the Silver Shoe as second highest goal scorer and also the Bronze Ball as third best player in the tournament.
In 2008, he went on an eye surgery and has not played professional football since then.
In December 2006, as he was training one day, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his eyes. And he could not see the ball again. His vision became blurred and he decided to see an optician. He was told that in a few days he could be blind if he did not have surgery. He went for it and the surgeon said it was a success.
He was expecting to see again, but there was no improvement. He visited the doctor and other hospitals in Paris without a solution. And they told him that his problem was a complex case.
That began Opabunmi’s journey to partial blindness and financial misery. Today, the player who was one of the large hearted players in the Eagles says he cant even afford N5,000 of his own, unlike when in his playing days, he bought cars for some people out of charity.
Although he admitted things are tough for him now, he insisted that he does not beg on the streets of
Ibadan, his hometown.
Enjoy the Excerpts of this exclusive interview the SUN had with him…
Are you still playing football now?
No I am not playing any longer because of my sight problem.
What happened?
When I was experiencing an eye problem, I reported to a Doctor who diagnosed it and said I had to go for an operation.
After the operation I noticed that I have lost one of my eyes. And I started going for medical check-up. I was told that the problem was becoming complicated.
Right now, you can only see with one eye?
Yes, I can now see with only one eye. The other one has gone totally blind.
What are you doing at the moment?
I must tell you I am not doing anything at the moment. I want to gather my self back, now I do one or two things to put body and soul together.
I also want to finish my coaching course so that I get back on my feet.
It was once reported that Femi Opabunmi was seen on Ibadan streets begging; how true is this?
It is not true that I go about Ibadan streets begging. I don’t go out, I normally stay indoors, so those who said they had seen me begging are making a mole out of the mountain. It is not true to be honest with you. But I always go to my friends, we sit together, we laugh and talk things over.
And I don’t know where they have seen me begging on the street. I have a brother, sister and my mum is there also. At least they are doing something. If I have course to beg for anything, I can go to them. They can ‘raise me up’ if they have. I don’t know where people got the story they are writing that Opabunmi turns to beggar. I think it is tarnishing one’s image.
But Femi is it true that things are very tough for you at the moment?
Yes things are tough for me at the moment, but not for people to say Opabunmi turns to a beggar. God forbid, Opabunmi is not a beggar. I reject that in Jesus name. Things are hard for me but not up to that extent.
You can imagine someone who was dashing people money before, buying cars for people and now I can hardly count five Thousand Naira of my own. It’s that bad for me now.
What is your advise to football administrators concerning those who are still playing and those who have retired from the game?
They should be hon

Sen. Ita Enang Reveal Northerners Own 80% Of Oil Blocks, Shows Proof To Back Up Claims.
Supporters of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) pushed their case further yesterday at the Senate, with startling facts on the sector.
Senator Ita Enang (Akwa Ibom North East) described the opposition to the 10 per cent host community fund by mostly northern senators as “misplaced”.
Enang, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, said that those opposed to the fund should know that over 83 per cent of oil blocks are owned by northerners.
But he did not give the number of oil blocks Nigeria has.
Senator David Mark, who seemed to have been shocked by what Enang said, said the Akwa Ibom lawmaker should not be distracted (some senators were grumbling) because he was making an important point.Mark asked Enang whether he could substantiate his claim.
Enang promptly pulled out a document from his folder and reeled out oil blocs and their owners.
He said he did not intend to divide the country but to guide those who wanted to contribute to the debate to be truly informed.
He listed northerners who own oil blocks to include Alhaji Mai Deribe, Borno State and owner of Cavendish Petroleum, which operates OML 110 with an average of about N4billion monthly.
He also listed Seplat/Platform Petroleum, operators of the ASUOKPU/UMUTU Marginal Field with Mallam (Prince) Sanusi Lamido, Kano , as a major shareholder and director.
South Atlantic Petroleum Limited (SAPETRO) established by General T. Y. Danjuma, Taraba State , who is also chairman of Eni Nigeria Limited.
SAPETRO partnered with Total Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI) and Brasoil Oil Services Company Nigeria Limited to become operators of the OPL 246.
AMNI International Petroleum and Development Company is owned by Alhaji (Colonel) Sani Bello of Kontangora , Niger State.
“They are operators of OML 112 and OML 117,” he said.
He said that a former Petroleum Minister and former OPEC Chairman, Rilwanu Lukman, another northerner manages AMNI oil blocks “with very key interest in the NNPC/Vitol trading deal.”
He said that Oriental Energy Resources Limited, a company owned by Alhaji Indimi, runs three oil blocks – OML 115, the Oldwok field and the Ebok field.
He said that Alhaji Aminu Dantata’s Express Petroleum and Gas Limited, operates OML 108.
Enang said that OML 113 allocated to Yinka Folawiyo Petroleum Limited is owned by Alhaji W.I. Folawiyo. Alhaji Saleh Mohammed Gambo, North East Petroleum Limited, is the holder of the OPL 215 Licence.
North East Petroleum was awarded blocs OPL 276 and OPL 283 and closing thereupon a Joint Venture Agreement with Centrica Resources Nigeria Limited and CCC Oil and Gas.
He said that INTEL is owned by former Vice President Atiku, the late Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Ado Bayero. It has substantial stakes in Nigeria ’s oil exploration industry both in Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe .
He said that Mike Adenuga’s Conoil is the oldest indigenous oil exploration company with six blocks. OPL 291 was awarded to Starcrest Energy Nigeria Limited, owned by Emeka Offor, which was sold to Addax Petroleum.
Enang urged the Senate to cause the immediate revocation of all oil blocks licences and their redistribution, in accordance with the Federal Character Principle.
He said: “My submission is that when you look at the distribution of those who own oil blocks and the amount of money that comes from the different oil blocks to the Federation Account and you see the owners of these oil blocks, you will agree with me that there is inequity in the distribution of oil blocks.
“The oil is produced in the Niger Delta yet it is the people of the Northeast and the Northwest and a little of the Northcentral, almost nothing of the Southwest and the Southeast, that are the persons owning and controlling these oil blocks.
“Almost nothing for the Southsouth, Niger Delta oil producing areas.
“They are quarreling with the area that takes just 13 per cent when you are producing the entire 100 per cent, you give some to the Federation Account and they give only 13 per cent of what you give and, of course, it is whatever you declared that you have produced. It is actually produced by you.
“I did not want to introduce something that is divisive.
“It is not intended to divide the country, it is intended to say ‘look, let us be realistic’.
“What some of the oil wells and the owners of the oil wells produce in a month and take as profit is sometimes more than what two or three states receive from the Federation Account.”
Enang noted that “when a group of people are richer than a state and then it is produced by you, then there is so much opposition that even the people who suffer the effect of the oil production should not be give host communities’ fund; and we have explained that the host communities fund is not only for the oil producing; it is for any of the communities that hosts oil infrastructure, which includes oil pipelines, refineries, gas pipelines and anything that is capable of causing danger.”
“If we had the host communities fund, the danger that we have been having in Arepo in Ogun State, the area would have benefited from the host communities fund.”
Enag said that other areas, such as Kaduna and some other states, will benefit from it.
He went on: “If you are producing and declaring only what you like and only the 10 per cent now being provided for the host communities and the 13 per cent which is after deducting everything, that cannot be in the interest of the country.
“What I am asking now is that oil blocs in the whole country should be revoked and redistributed according to Federal Character Principle.
“We are not saying that we in the Southsouth should have all or the Southeast should have all or the Southwest should have all.
“In fact, if there are 18 oil blocs or 36 oil blocks, we don’t mind that you give us at least four, Northeast four, Southeast four, Northwest four.
“At least, let there be equity, but then there should be the principle of who owns it and then you give us more.
“But at this time, we don’t even have it. The 13 per cent is what we are even suffering to sustain.”
Senator Olufemi Lanlehin (Oyo South) praised the maturity of Senators in considering the bill.
He urged the Senate to look at the “absolute and sweeping powers” granted the President in Section 191 of the bill.
The Section, he said, gives the President absolute and unqualified powers to grant petroleum licences to whoever he pleases.
Lanlehin prayed the Senate to use the opportunity of the bill to design a template that would grow the economy.
Senator Adegbenga Kaka (Ogun East) said he was supporting the bill with mixed feelings.
He noted that the trend of the debate seemed to indicate that senators were more concerned about how to share the cake and not how to bake it.
Kaka said the power granted the minister of petroleum in the bill should be reconsidered “so that we don’t give too much power to the minister.”
The lawmaker who insisted that the bill should be finetuned, said certain percentage of earnings should be set aside to fix electricity, agriculture and other infrastructure.
Senator Mohammed Goje (Gombe Central) said before the debate, he was completely against the bill.
He said the trend of the debate showed that the Senate was poised to do justice to the bill by removing offensive sections.
To him, it seems a consensus is being built around certain sections of the bill.
He noted that most contributors agreed that the power of the minister should be reduced, such that the minister will just be like any other minister.
Goje said: “We should not create a super minister.”
He said that definite provision should be made for frontier exploration, especially adequate funding.
He opposed 10 per cent host community fund.
Senator Barnabas Gemade (Benue North East) described the bill as very important and long overdue.
Gemade said an adage says: “Wherever you find oil, corruption creeps in and wherever you find diamond war emerges.”
He said the adage had been proved to be true.
Gemade said the bill contained good and bad provisions. He listed the good sections to include development of the gas sector, increase in promotion of local content and the unbundling of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The bad sections, he said, include the minister’s economic power.
On the host community fund, Gemade said efforts should be made to ensure that it does not degenerate to very poor management of resources as it is, according to him, in the Niger Delta Development Commission, 13 per cent derivation and others.
On the frontier exploration, he said more effort should be geared towards discovering oil in other places.
Senator Akin Odunsi ( Ogun West) described the bill as the most important legislation before the National Assembly.
Odunsi noted that the bill becomes even more important when it is recognised that the country runs a mono economy based on oil.
The lawmaker cautioned against undue sentiment in the consideration of the bill.
He agreed that the bill was not perfect but posited that it could be fine-tuned to engender development.
Senator Abdulahi Adamu (Nasarawa West) said he was giving the bill “a reserved support”.
Adamu expressed worry about the absence of transparency and accountability in the oil sector.
He said the bill appears to contradict the Constitution (as amended), especially when it is recognised that oil and gas as well as other minerals are in the Exclusive List and under the control of the Federal Government.
The lawmaker cautioned about the unbundling of the NNPC in order not to put up the corporation for outright purchase by wealthy Nigerians.
On the host community fund, Adamu said the provision would create the fourth tier of government.
To Senator Gbenga Ashafa (Lagos East), the bill will be counter productive in its present form. He demanded the definition of host community.
Ashafa said pipelines burst at times not because of vandalisation but because of the integrity of the pipes.
Senator Ayogu Eze said his support for the bill stemmed from the realization that the oil sector should be reformed.
Eze highlighted issues of details in the bill, which, he said, should be addressed at the committee and public hearing levels.
It was obvious that most northern Senators were not comfortable with what Enang said.

Nationwide darkness looms as electricity supply drops to 1,400MW
Darkness looms across the country as the total amount of power available to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to distribute to homes and offices across Nigeria has dropped to 1,400 megawatts, MW, as at 12 midnight, Tuesday 17th, May, 2016.
This was disclosed yesterday by the System Operation/ Market Operation Department of the TCN in a statement issued in Abuja by its Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Clement Ezeolisah.
Ezeolisah explained that the drop in the electricity generation into the national grid was as a result of operational challenges experienced by gas power generation companies in the country.
He further blamed the situation on constraints in the thermal power stations which have prevented the generators from producing at optimal levels.
Ezeolisah expressed the regret of TCN over the attendant inconvenience the low power generation has caused homes and businesses in the country, stressing that, “it is noteworthy to report that all stakeholders are working assiduously to achieve improvements in the power supply deliverables. The attendant inconvenience as a result of low power generation is regretted.”
While the statement was silent on the nature of these challenges that caused the load shedding, it may not be unconnected with the dip in gas supply to the plants. Key pipelines in the Niger Delta conveying gas to power plants in the south have been vandalised and are undergoing repairs which the government said will be completed within the last days of this month.

Dana and Nadia Bruna, twins sis that make over £20,000 a month posting pictures of their pert posteriors on Instagram
Dana and Nadia Bruna, 30, who live in Miami, Florida, make £20,000 a month by posting ‘belfies’ – bum selfies - of their rounded rears online for their 1.1 million Instagram fans to ogle.
“We have the most famous bottoms on Instagram and the bottom sells a lot,” said Dana.
“We’ve had a lot of work offers because of it. We are the selfie queens and we’ve made a successful business out if it.”
The sisters, who were born in Argentina, decided to boost their already genetically pert posteriors by transferring 3kg of fat from other areas of their body.
Nadia said: “Our bottoms were already fatty.
“We always had bottom - it was never a difficulty to have bottom, but six months ago we did a fat transfer with a really good doctor in Columbia and it has given us a positively perfect one.
“We did the fat transfer because we are vain. We are vain women and the more surgery you have the more you want.”
Dana added: “We were blessed with having a curvy body because of Latin and Brazilian blood, so it’s easy for us to keep the bottom well-toned."
The pair, whose bums measure 102cm each thanks to their love of surgery and bum-boosting exercises, take up to 150 selfies every day.
The cosmetically-enhanced twosome have had over £40,000 worth of surgery for free by advertising the jaw-dropping results on their social media pages.
As well as having their buttocks inflated, they’ve also had three matching breast enhancement surgeries each, lip fillers, porcelain veneers and regular Botox.
The twins are hoping to rake in even more money by selling ‘belfies’ on the Supe app, where users can purchase photographs and short video clips.
Nadia said: “The app is a new concept, similar to SnapChat, but with the sexiest Instagram models where we have to make short videos or take photos, then they have a price.
“It has existed for two months and we are already earning £6,000 per month with the videos.
“Between that and Instagram we make between £10,000 and £12,000 a month each. In total it is around £20,000 together.”
Nadia said she “felt bad” at the beginning and feared she was just a “sexual object for men”.She said: “Now I see it as a blessing and to be honest I am thankful to them – it is a positive thing.
“Even if people don’t believe it, our idea is also to help women be able to lift their self-esteem and to give them a hand too. We can give tips to other women.”
But not everyone agrees with the twins’ attitude and they have received abusive comments online.
Nadia said: “We have had problems with ‘haters’ lots of times. A lot of the time without knowing you they say you don’t have brains.
